How to Paint a Portrait on a Brush + Tips for Painting on Unusual Surfaces
Today, we are used to seeing works of art in galleries and museums on traditional stretched canvases. But what if we expanded our idea of what an artwork can be placed on? Unexpected bases and surfaces bring a new dimension and innovation to the art world, often with a much-wanted element of surprise.
One advantage of these bases is that they often have a story to tell, too. For example, painting on an old wooden table can bring its history to life. An artwork on an unconventional surface takes on a new dimension or context, making it even more interesting.
A Paintbrush Reborn
Brush is traditionally a tool for creating art . But have you ever thought that it could also be a canvas?
Perhaps your faithful companion, a brush, has reached a point where you thought there was no hope left for it. Suddenly, we found ourselves with a brush that had gone hard.
Instead of throwing it away, we decided to give it a second chance. So we started an experiment: painting on a brush. And not just any painting, but a portrait!
As we considered the idea, a few people immediately came to mind whom we wanted to immortalize on this unconventional “canvas.” In the end, the portrait of a particularly inspiring woman won out…
We gathered our brushes and acrylic paints and got to work. Bright red lips, raven-black hair, bold eyebrows, and flowers in her hair. Maybe you can guess who we painted on the brush.

If you want your brush painting to turn out well, first find an image for inspiration, or simply sketch your own. Mix the right shades on your palette, and, if needed, thicken or thin the paint with a suitable medium for acrylic paints.
If you want to be precise, you can first paint the surface a single color. Some people use a shade of brown, while others choose a shade similar to Burnt Sienna. You can also use white or black paint.
Remember to paint the shaded areas correctly, depending on where the light source is.
If your brush painting has several layers, make sure each layer dries thoroughly before painting the next one.
We added the finishing touches.

When we were done, we had a miniature portrait of Frida in front of us. And we admit, we wondered what she would think of it. We hope she would have encouraged our creativity.
If we decide to give it to someone, we’ll be sure to seal it with varnish, to make sure the painting lasts as long as possible. We think this little artwork makes a suitable gift for almost anyone, not just artists. It’s a way to show that even things that seem unusable can be turned into something beautiful.
So we want to encourage you to join us in this experiment. Maybe you have a brush at home that deserves another chance. Try turning it into a work of art.
Why Paint a Portrait on a Brush?
If you’re not quite convinced why you should spend time on an old brush, here are a few reasons:
Symbolism: A brush is an artist’s tool. A portrait on a brush can express the idea that the tool itself can also carry art.
Recycling: Instead of throwing away a stiff brush, it’s great to reuse it and give it a new life.
Uniqueness: Painting on unusual surfaces or objects adds originality to a piece. A portrait on such an unusual surface can look surprising and interesting, making it a great gift, for example.
Last but not least, the texture of a brush’s bristles resembles real hair.

Handmade Gifts
Since we’re talking about gifts, let’s remember what makes handmade gifts so special.
Making handmade gifts is a gesture that simply touches the heart. While commercial products can often feel impersonal and mass-produced, handmade gifts carry a little piece of their creator’s soul.
You put your time and energy into every handmade gift. And what’s even better, no two are exactly alike. That means no one else will give the exact same gift. In short, making and giving handmade gifts is a way to express deep respect, appreciation, or love for another person.
7 Unusual Surfaces and Motif Ideas
Since we’ve started talking about unusual surfaces for painting, we can’t wrap up without sharing a few more ideas for other “original canvases.” Here are 7 ideas along with motif suggestions:
Silk Scarf: Use silk paints to create exotic flowers, geometric shapes, ornaments, or mandala patterns on a scarf.
Handbag: Geometric shapes or abstract painting can create a modern, stylish look. Or eye-catching titles, quotes, or slogans made with leather paints can turn an ordinary handbag into a work of art.
CD or an old vinyl record: Galaxies or space scenes are great motif ideas. The shine of these objects adds another dimension to starry paintings.
Stone or Wooden Cutouts: Suitable motifs for these natural materials include animals, plants, simple landscapes, forest scenes, or portraits. The wood grain also gives the painting a warm, natural look.
Sneakers and a Denim Jacket: With fabric paints, you can create cartoon characters, superheroes, a mix of favorite hobbies, or sports motifs on sneakers. Lettering and tattoo style are often used to create original denim fashion.
Cutting Board: Ideal for displaying folk motifs in bright colors or in the traditional blue-print style.
Mirror: Imagine delicate, ethereal floral patterns spreading around the edges of a mirror… Or create motivational phrases such as: "Beauty is in how you see yourself."
Experimenting with unusual surfaces is a great way to bring your creative work to life. It’s a reminder that the only true artistic limit is our own imagination. Don’t be afraid to experiment and try the new options available to you. Let’s look for beauty and inspiration in everything around us. And perhaps just when we think we’ve seen it all, something entirely new and unexpected will appear in the least likely place.
