Discover the Magic of Texture with Modeling Paste

Using Texture Paste on Canvas to Create Raised Textures

Hello, art lovers!

At ARTMiE, we're always looking for new ways to push the boundaries of creativity. While we adore the fluidity of watercolor and the vibrancy of acrylic paints, sometimes a work of art calls for... simply something more. More depth, more dimension, more tactile appeal. That's where the incredible world of texture mediums comes in, and today we want to highlight one of our favorites: Texture Paste!

Right now, we're feeling very inspired by the wonderful resources from our partners at Kreul (you may know their great paints SOLO GOYA!), and we wanted to share some of that inspiration, along with our excitement about adding physical depth to artwork. There's something magical about creating a piece you want to touch, don't you think?

What exactly IS texture paste?

Think of texture paste (or modeling paste) as a thick, moldable medium that you can apply to your canvas, wooden panel, paper or other painting surfaces before or during painting. As the experts at Kreul say, it lets you create “raised surfaces,” transforming a flat canvas into a landscape of peaks, valleys, and interesting patterns.

It usually starts out white and dries hard, creating a stable, textured surface that you can paint over with acrylic or other paints once dry. Some pastes even come pre-colored or with materials such as sand or glitter added for different effects! We really love how versatile it is.

Why Add Texture to Your Art?

Adding texture with texture paste is about more than just creating a bumpy surface. Texture:

- Adds visual weight and draws attention: Textured areas naturally catch the eye and create focal points.

- Enhances emotions: Rough textures can convey energy or ruggedness, while smoother, softer textures can feel calmer. It adds another layer to your artistic story.

- Creates depth and dimension: Literally! It makes parts of your painting physically stand out, creating a fascinating play of light and shadow.

- It's simply FUN: Honestly, working hands-on with paste and tools is incredibly satisfying and freeing. It encourages experimentation, and you'll feel relaxed while doing it.

How to Get Started: It's Easier Than You Think

Intrigued? Getting started with texture paste is wonderfully simple.

- Your surface: Prepare a canvas, board, or paper with a high weight (g/m²).

- Your tools: A palette knife (or spatula or comb) is your best friend! Palette knives, old credit cards, texture combs, and even sponges can create different effects. Experimentation is key.

- Application: Scoop a little paste onto a palette or directly onto the surface (use your judgment). Use your chosen tool to spread, shape, dab, or create patterns. You can aim for subtle effects or create dramatic peaks.

- Tip: For fine lines or delicate details, try a finer paste. A coarser paste is great for bold, thick textures. At ARTMiE, you'll find a coarser paste already mixed with a strong black pigment. It reminded us of the darkness of midnight, so we named it Midnight.

- Drying time: This is important! Let the paste dry completely before painting over it. Drying time varies depending on the thickness of the layer, but patience pays off and helps you avoid cracks or smudging. Check the product instructions.

- Painting: Once the paste is dry, you can paint over the textured surface with acrylic paints, oil paints, or other mediums. Watch how the paint catches on the raised areas. It's beautiful! You can even mix acrylic paint directly into the wet paste for instant colored texture.

Endless Possibilities

From creating rugged mountain ranges in a landscape painting, to imitating the texture of bark or sand, to purely abstract relief explorations, texture paste opens up a world of creative possibilities. Try combining smooth areas with textured ones for contrast, or use stencils with paste to create defined shapes.

We're excited just thinking about all the different ways to play with it, like creating gentle waves, bold geometric patterns, or delicate floral reliefs. What ideas are starting to take shape for you?

Ready to Add Dimension?

We hope this overview of texture pastes has inspired you to experiment for yourself. It's a wonderful way to push your creative boundaries and add a unique, tactile element to your artwork. If you'd like to give it a try, we have some great options in the ARTMiE collection, including pastes like SOLO GOYA Structure Pastes by Kreul, which inspired this post.

Go ahead, try working with texture and take your artwork to a new level! We can't wait to see what you create.

Have fun experimenting!
