5 Tips for Choosing the Right Easel

5 Tips for Choosing the Right Easel

Hi, I’m your new easel, and I’d love to fit you just right so we can create together as an inseparable pair. I want to be the perfect match for your art. Did you know that the English word for easel (easel) comes from the Dutch word “ezel,” which literally means donkey? The name probably came about because this animal is often used to carry loads. And we easels also carry precious loads: canvases on which art is born. So choose me carefully, so I can serve you as well as I can!

I, an easel, am a basic art supply that you’ll find in our selection in a wide range of options. You can choose me by size, brand, price, or material, and in various sizes and prices. I can be mini, tabletop, studio, or outdoor.

.

It’s true that we easels can be one of the most expensive things in your studio that you invest in. On the other hand, you’ll spend most of your creative time with me, so you’ll definitely appreciate it if I make you comfortable and don’t cause you any trouble. Before you choose me, I’d like to tell you about my measurements and features, so I’ll be just right for your art. When choosing, the most important thing is to consider which techniques you use.

How to Choose the Right Easel?

Curious about how to choose the right easel? The most important thing is to decide which technique you’ll use it for. We’ve put together an overview of the features that will help you choose the ideal easel for your art.

1. Which Technique Do You Use Most?

Which Easel Should You Choose for Acrylic, Watercolor, and Oil Painting?

If you combine media or work with watercolors or the fluid acrylic technique (fluid acrylics), you’ll probably enjoy creating at a very low angle or even in a completely horizontal position. Some easels are designed specifically for working with watercolors. They let you adjust the angle as needed, so you can paint horizontally. These are smaller tabletop easels, so they won’t take up even half of half of your creative corner. They’re most often chosen by creative people who see painting as a hobby.

With watercolor painting, the current trend is to let a few trails of colored pigment run down the page. An easel with an adjustable angle will serve you well for this.

If you’re an artist who likes to use pastels, you’ll appreciate having your work tilted vertically or angled forward. This lets pastel dust fall down easily and makes creating less of a hassle. Most easels are suitable for painting with acrylics and oils. Using an easel set vertically prevents dust from settling unnecessarily on wet paint.

You’ll appreciate this most when painting with oil paints, since they take much longer to dry than acrylic paints.

You’ll find several of my friends among the vertical easels

A-frame easels are suitable for drawing portraits and figures with charcoal and graphite (life drawing). If you want to use an easel for this technique, we recommend a lightweight tripod easel (also called an A-frame easel), along with a sketching surface. It’s very practical and ideal for holding drawing paper. You can also fold it up easily, and it fits into any bag, so it’s easy to carry.

Sketching and box easels

So-called box easels are often included in the sketching easel category. They fold up easily and offer space to store painting supplies. That makes them a good choice if you paint with oils, acrylics, or colored pencils.

You’ll find them here with a practical leather handle that makes it more comfortable to carry from place to place on your creative outings. They also contain a wooden palette for conveniently mixing paints.

2. Do you want me in the studio or out in nature?

Studio easels for large canvases

If you plan to work in a studio, feel free to choose a heavier, larger easel. This is especially worthwhile if you paint on larger canvases. When painting outdoors, you need a somewhat lighter, more portable easel that can also be positioned securely on any surface. Outdoor easels are usually treated with oils to prevent moisture from getting in during bad weather. If the previous lines sound like you, I recommend my colleague, an aluminum easel.

The previously mentioned box easel is also an ideal companion for you. You can store all your supplies in it and adjust its height as needed. It even has rubber feet that adapt to any uneven surface and protect your work from the wind.

3. I Need My Space, and So Do You

If you don’t want to keep pushing me into a corner, folding me up, and putting me away in a closet, choose me in a smaller, tabletop version instead, so we’ll both be happy. This way, you can leave your artwork to dry or simply show it off as a decorative piece on a table or living room dresser. If your creative corner is limited and you don’t paint on very large canvases, you’ll definitely be happier with me than with a large easel. What’s more, we easels are also made in mini versions and midi sizes for display and decorative purposes, but we can still support your art at exhibitions in grand style!

4. I Want to Get to Know Your Artistic Style

H-Frame Easels, Stability for Professionals

Another kind of my brother easel is the trestle, or H-frame easel. It got its name from the shape of the letter H it resembles. It was designed to provide stability for any heavy canvases. I also recommend it if you’re the kind of painter who paints energetically and sometimes has a heavy hand. It provides the stability you need for a more energetic painting style, too.

You’ll find it in a convenient size in our selection. But we also have a giant brother that can grow up to 229 cm and comes with a sketching board. Another H-frame easel is a cousin who came from Monaco, and is even sturdier and taller.

You can extend it to 293 cm and move it around easily thanks to the wheels on its base. It also has a handy storage shelf that you can adjust to the height you need.

These are the greatest points of pride among easels from the Valeriano family.

5. How Big Will Your Artwork Be? (I know it’ll be spectacular, but if you know what canvas sizes you paint on most often, I can support you as much as possible.)

Based on the size of your canvas, you can choose just the right type for you here at artmie.sk, one that catches your eye and feels right in your hands. I believe I’ll be your perfect easel and that you’ll experience art to the fullest with me.
